Hive Team Rider Update - Allie Britton

Kat Hogg - Friday, December 30, 2011

Hive Team Rider Allie Britton competed in the first event for the Tasmanian Ocean Swimwear Series and won the Open Female Event. Check out the article in the Mercury Newspaper. Go Allie!!

The Pier River swim at the opening of the Taste Festival in Hobart was held in perfect conditions yesterday. Former Olympic and world champion swimmer Michael Klim took a break from training to set the record field on its way. The field tackling the River Derwent featured competitors from around Australia. In the women's race, Carlton Park's state ironwoman champion and Hive Team Rider Allie Britton went straight to the lead and was never headed. Amanda Duggan was second, ahead of previous multiple winner Karina Crocker, of Ulverstone.

Britton now leads the Rocket Science Sports swim series, with the next race to be held at Port Sorell on Monday.  The next round of the Navy Surf Boat series will be held as a twilight event on the Saturday afternoon. The Sunday will feature a full program of surf skis, boards, swimming, beach and ironman racing for senior competitors. The junior lifesavers will hold their events at Port Sorell on January 7.

The second round of the national ironman series returns to Portsea in Victoria on the same weekend. The venue has a reputation for big surf and breaking the hearts of well-credentialled lifesavers. Last year series leaders Liz Pluimers and Hugh Dougherty came unstuck in the two-three metre waves and eventually lost the series. Interest will focus on some of the sport's big names such as Zane Holmes, Shannon Eckstein and Kristyl Smith to see if they can catch the emerging stars from the first round.

Hive Swimwear Volleyball Team Swain/Huddy

Kat Hogg - Thursday, December 22, 2011

The Hive Swimwear Volleyball Team Swain/Huddy recently competed in the 1st round of the QLD State tour where the girls won silver which they are very happy about. Although it rained for most of the day on Saturday during their qualifier matches, the girls still managed to score some blue skies for the finals on the Sunday.

Now they have just returned from Round 2 of the Renault Australian National Beach Volleyball Series held in Glenelg. Unfortunately, the girls did not have a very good tournament this time around and did not manage to qualify for finals in this event.

The girls are now on a well deserved break over the new year with the next tournament being held on the Gold Coast on the 7th January. This will be a day and night event held at the Surfers Paradise Foreshore, with a licensed bar, DJs, and bands all to be set up under a marquee on the sand beside centre court. Should be quite the spectacle!

Britt Cox takes out day one at the US Selections

Kat Hogg - Wednesday, December 21, 2011

AIS/NSWIS Mogul Skier Britt Cox has built on her finals performance at the opening World Cup of the year to take out victory on day one at the US Selection event in Steamboat, Colorado, USA. The US Selection events feature strong development level skiers from the USA, who are all competing for a start in the US World Cup's. A number of international athletes also competed as it serves as a high quality event early in the international season.

Cox had an outstanding day, qualifying in first place for the final and was able to replicate another leading score to take victory. Joining Britt in the women's final was AIS/NSWIS team-mate Nicole Parks, who made the final in her first event of the season. Nicole showed some promising pieces in her run and as the season develops will have the opportunity to put the whole run together.

AIS Mogul Skiing Coach Steve Desovich was pleased with the winning performance of his young athlete. "Britt skied consistently today and continued with her fine jumping and overall skiing." "We are especially pleased she executed two consecutive runs at close to her current capacity."

Matt Graham also performed very well, narrowly missing out on the podium in fifth place. Coach Desovich was also happy with Matt's performance, where a slightly different race strategy, being slightly more conservative was employed. "Matt was able to achieve some key objectives in today’s event. We look forward to continuing the process of trying to achieve consistent performances throughout the season."

Two more events are scheduled to take place in Steamboat, another moguls event on December 21 and a dual mogul event on December 22.

Kat Hogg - Monday, December 19, 2011

Hiveswimwear team rider Isabella Nichols claimed victory in the Under 14s’ Rip Curl Grom Search on Friday last week. Isabella over-shadowed an impressive group of girls including Palm Beachs’ Kiani Dobbyn, Tweed Heads’ Alyssa Lock and Noosa’s Lucy Callister.

“I am very happy with this win. My approach to surfing this comp was focused and it paid off. It was nice to win in front of a home crowd with family and friends” Isabella said.

Isabella Nichols is now on top of the series ratings. Isabella will have a well earned break from surfing competitions for a month which will give her time to get ready for some training. Hive Swimwear is so impressed with Isabella that they will assist with mentoring for her first international surf camp in Indonesia next year.

Hive Team Rider Update - Alice Gilbert

Kat Hogg - Thursday, December 15, 2011

Hive Team Rider Alice Gilbert recently competed in the Action Sports Ready National Junior Titles in Nov / Dec at Coffs Harbour NSW. It was an amazing experience for Alice as she was chosen as a co-captain of the South Aussie Team which was a great honour for her.

She really enjoyed this role, especially supporting the other team members and helping out the girls in particular.

Alice was lucky enough to make all three competitions, the South Australian All Stars, South Australian School Team and the South Australian State Team and surfed a total of 5 times during the competition and although she didnt make it through any of her heats, she was still excited to be surfing in heats with some of her favourite surfers who are junior champions.

Just making the teams and earning the right to surf in these competitions is a huge achievement for Alice and surfing at this level really improves her surfing and give her inspiration.
