Hive Team Rider Allie Britton competed in the first event for the Tasmanian Ocean Swimwear Series and won the Open Female Event. Check out the article in the Mercury Newspaper. Go Allie!!
The Pier River swim at the opening of the Taste Festival in Hobart was held in perfect conditions yesterday. Former Olympic and world champion swimmer Michael Klim took a break from training to set the record field on its way. The field tackling the River Derwent featured competitors from around Australia. In the women's race, Carlton Park's state ironwoman champion and Hive Team Rider Allie Britton went straight to the lead and was never headed. Amanda Duggan was second, ahead of previous multiple winner Karina Crocker, of Ulverstone.
Britton now leads the Rocket Science Sports swim series, with the next race to be held at Port Sorell on Monday. The next round of the Navy Surf Boat series will be held as a twilight event on the Saturday afternoon. The Sunday will feature a full program of surf skis, boards, swimming, beach and ironman racing for senior competitors. The junior lifesavers will hold their events at Port Sorell on January 7.
The second round of the national ironman series returns to Portsea in Victoria on the same weekend. The venue has a reputation for big surf and breaking the hearts of well-credentialled lifesavers. Last year series leaders Liz Pluimers and Hugh Dougherty came unstuck in the two-three metre waves and eventually lost the series. Interest will focus on some of the sport's big names such as Zane Holmes, Shannon Eckstein and Kristyl Smith to see if they can catch the emerging stars from the first round.
